Background
The increase and spread of the influenza A H5N1 virus (Avian Flu) within bird species along with its occasional transmission to humans, has heightened awareness of the potential for Avian Flu to cause a pandemic via widespread human to human transmission. Such a pandemic could kill upwards of 2 million Americans with over 40% of our national workforce being affected ( Source: National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza, Implementation Plan, May 2006)
Not to Panic...But...
The effect of an Avian Flu pandemic could be far-reaching. Beyond deaths and sickness, life as we know it will change during the pandemic. There may be travel restrictions, disruption of utility and other services, possible quarantines and potential shortages of food. The mere perception of the flu “being out there, somewhere”, will cause a reluctance of people to want to participate in group activities (sporting events, church etc.) and will likely cause significant absenteeism in work.
Be Prepared
Realize that the avian flu pandemic is a possibility. Avian Flu may spread to many birds in the United States. However it may spread to humans or may not spread to humans in a less threatening form. On the other hand, evidence from the Spanish flu of 1918 showed quite rapid world-wide spread with little time for reaction. Unsettling news of the Midwestern-US mumps outbreak in early April 2006 indicates how rapidly a health related concern can travel. The Federal Government’s Pandemic Implementation Plan along with response plans for each state and many local plans show that government is taking the pandemic threat very seriously. It’s best to be prepared and that’s where we can help.
